M2.2 Blog: Personal Care Products

For my personal care product breakdown I chose to look more closely at my shaving cream and my face lotion. I wanted to pick personal products I use a majority of the week. Going in to the search of what is included in these products I was expecting a serious health hazard to be located based on what I had been reading. I was pleasantly surprised, in fact, relieved to know that at least one of the products I was using was generally safe. Almost every ingredient for both products contained some sort of evidence to support an allergy or toxicity and this was concerning.

The lotion I use, Aveeno, contained generally safe ingredients. There was one ingredient that got a moderate warning at level 5. This ingredient is Benzyl Alcohol. This serves as a preservative and is also naturally occurring. Allery/immunotoxicity is the main concern for this ingredient.

For my Edge Shaving Cream, one ingredient registered as highly unsafe. It had a ranking of 7 on the unsafe scale. The main culprit was Isobutane. Isobutane is the propellent used to help spray out the gel for shaving. Allergy/immunotoxicity is the main issue for this ingredient. Additional information on Edge shaving gel can be found in my video above.

I think this information is great to have. However, I don’t think the FDA (or whoever is responsible) make it readily available or easily attainable. I think the public has a right to know what they are using and what is included in the items. I also believe that if the public actually knew then a lot of people would be scared. Industries would change and the food business may be disrupted. Information should be made available and access should be easy, no doubt. As a result of these findings with my personal products, I will most likely change up my shaving gel. I will look into a more natural soap based brush on product.

  1. Hi Dan,
I agree that everyone has the right to know about the harmful ingredients in their personal care products. If there there is a great demand from people to products that are certified by the EWG that it is safe, I think industries will start revise their formulas to meet customers' demand.

  2. Hey Dan,
That's nice that your products were generally safe. One of my products didn't do so well. Ideally, no products would have any harmful components. I definitely agree that this information should be more accessible to the consumers so that we can make more conscious choices when purchasing these personal products.
