M5.4 CCR and water quality

For contra costa county (East Bay MUD) you can find the CCR here:

Quite an interesting pdf that contra costa has put together. I had no idea the water I drank all my life came from a river. Almost all of EBMUD’s water comes from the 577-square mile watershed of the Mokelumne River on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. I just assumed it was from a mountain source like Mt. Shasta or Lanier.

For chemicals within the water, surprisingly, most amounts were all well under the federal requirements. So, I am pleasantly pleased that my drinking water is not bad. Most of the chemicals within the water are from fertilizer and surface run off. These include chromium and vanadium. Aluminum was surprising to me. I was surprised that was there. The amounts were tiny and they list is as due to erosion of natural deposits and due to the water filtration process. However, as toxnet states, aluminum can cause asthma, urticaria, and pnuemoconioses.

Currently, I do, well, my wife uses a water filter for our tap water. After watching all the videos, I guess it really doesn't do anything! So, Ill probably just go straight to the tap from now on. I do at restaurants so why not at home. I do drink bottled water. I always buy vitamin water. I can do a much better job at brining a Nalgene and filling that up with a flavored water packet.

  1. Hi Dan,
I also did not know where my water came from until after this exercise. I think I take our supply of water for granted because I can easily have access to it by turning on the facet. Learning where my water came from and that there is a limited supply of it made me appreciate it more and be more eco-friendly to protect our waters.

  2. Hi Dan,
Since I live in Contra Costa too, EBMUD also serves the place where I live. I also thought it was an interesting infographic that they put together. It was cool to learn all the details about the water use and drink everyday, and even cooler that the water's quality is very high!
